About
As a senior in high school, I got my first taste of photography working at a little camera store in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. At the time, I never even considered it becoming my career. In any case, I went on to college out west where I double majored in Design Engineering and Economics. The plan was to enroll to get a Master's Degree in Architecture upon completing my first 2 degrees. The entire time I was in school I was always thinking about photography, but kept it on the back burner, merely considering it as a hobby. With the untimely death of one of my little sisters I decided I needed to spend more time "enjoying the ride" so........I dropped out of school and almost immediately opened up a wedding photography studio. After 2 years of that, I decided a change was in order so my wife and I moved our family of 4 at the time to Phoenix where her folks had transferred from Philadelphia a year earlier. I worked as a photo assistant with a commercial lifestyle photographer in the city for a little over a year before I headed out on my own.
In 1993 the Phoenix Suns acquired the NBA superstar Charles Barkley so I immediately did some test shots and had my rep at the time approach the Suns about shooting some posters of Sir Charles. They liked the idea as well as what I shot so they hired me to shoot a series of images of Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson and Dan Majerle. The portrait of Charles was used as a wrap on local buses. The first bus wrap campaign in the entire nation. I did some self promos, won some awards advertised in the Creative Black Book and the next thing I knew had a New York rep and was shooting with Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Larry Bird for McDonalds.
Throughout my career, I have completely fallen in love with light and learning how to use it to create specific moods and feelings, helping tell a story within a series of photographs. I am, after all is said and done, a people person. I'm all about relationships and the idea of "connection" seems to always find itself within my imagery. Not really too surprising, when you consider I've known my wife since I was 10 years old. We now have 5 kids and couldn't be happier with "the ride" we've been on together.
I've known most of my current LA based crew for over 10 years and at this point, we're also a family. They are the absolute best. Everyone is exceptional at what they do and there is plenty of mutual trust to go around. It makes for a fun and extremely loose and comfortable set.....and that makes our clients relax and that helps our models and subjects feel comfortable enough to be themselves. All this ensures that our photographs look authentic and real. I'm so fortunate to get to work with people of this caliber.
If you told me back when I was 18 years old and competing with a coworker for my boss's attention in some little camera shop in PA that I was going to end up flying all over the world, shooting in some of the most beautiful places on Earth with countless amazing models, working with some of the world's greatest athletes, meeting and shooting some of the coolest celebrities, and yes.....even penguins in South Africa, I wouldn't have believed it.
Sooooo, if you like how I see the world and have a project that you believe my crew and I are a good fit for, please call and let's see if we can do your story justice together.
